OVERVIEW

This project revolves around the core theme of China's Fulu culture. In ancient China, people believed that these characters and symbols had magical powers, enabling them to use the forces of spirits and gods.

However, now this culture has been almost forgotten and abandoned, so I try to explore their visual forms and psychological effects, imbuing the Fulu culture with new meaning from a perspective of psychological healing.

According to a survey report by CBNweekly, 30.24% of the surveyed individuals experience stress several times a day, while 43.3% feel that the stress they endure has reached a point where it becomes overwhelming.

In previous research, I found that the complexity of Fulu increased the difficulty of people understanding them. Therefore, I attempted to deconstruct them conceptually, extract key information, and use geometric shapes to reshape it.

However, I found that excessive simplification reduced the Fulu’s visual persuasiveness, conflicting with my intention of designing them for psychological healing. I therefore explored a more modern, psychedelic approach, ultimately combining optical illusions and Op Art. I also experimented with motion graphics to enhance the desired effect.

Then, I designed an app to host the Fulu experience. The process was straightforward, as I focused more on the “finding and using Fulu” functionality.

In the end, considering the representation of candles in our perception as carriers of ambiance and healing, I extracted the colors of the eight symbols I made to craft eight candles. The final presentation also imitate a Taoist ritual.
